Notes:
Many small studies mostly in animal models, some human studies, show that that the effects of calcium channel blockers are not class specific.
Most studies with the dihydropyridine class show no reduction in proteinuria or glomerular scarring. The one exception to this may be amlodipine which appeared to have similar benefits as to ACE inhibitors in Type 2 diabetics (3 year study).
Nondihydropyridines have an effect of membrane permablility and decrease proteinuria similar to ACE inhibitors.
At least one study showed additional benefit of combining Trandolopril and verapamil over either agent alone.
